The Vidin – Felix Romuliana Trail is a cross-border cycling route that connects three key Roman sites—the Danube fortified colony of Bononia (Vidin), the border fortress Castra Martis, and the imperial palace of Felix Romuliana. The journey spans two millennia of history, following the traces of the Roman limes—the fortified frontier of the Roman Empire along the Danube.
The route begins in Vidin, a city home to the best-preserved medieval fortress in the Balkans—Baba Vida Fortress—built on Roman foundations. The Danube city, formerly Roman Bononia, was an important commercial and military center along the Danube limes.
Just 32 km south of Vidin lies Castra Martis near Kula—one of the most significant Roman military fortresses in the Balkans from the 4th century, featuring spectacularly preserved walls. Emperor Constantine the Great stayed here and managed the defense of the limes from this site.
After crossing the border at Vrška Čuka, the route continues to Zaječar, where the National Museum houses key preparations for visiting Felix Romuliana, including original exhibits such as the head of Emperor Galerius and magnificent mosaics.
The route culminates at Felix Romuliana—a UNESCO site from the 3rd–4th century, an imperial palace, and the temple of Roman Emperor Galerius. It is one of the most important late-antique archaeological sites in Europe, the place where the emperor spent the final days of his life.
