Tupižnica is a demanding mountain cycling route that leads from Knjaževac to one of the most beautiful mountains of eastern Serbia – Mount Tupižnica. This route is designed for experienced MTB riders looking for a true mountain challenge, rewarded at the end with spectacular panoramic views from the peaks Bučanski Kamen (Ledenički Peak) – approx. 1160 m and Glogovački Kamen – approx. 1162 m.
Mount Tupižnica is known for its limestone massif, rich flora and fauna, and numerous speleological formations. The most famous among them are Tupižnica Ice Cave (Tupižnička Ledenica) and Davidova Propast, a vertical cave about 100 meters deep. From the mountain peaks, visitors can enjoy unforgettable views of the Timok region, surrounding mountains, and valleys.
There are two main routes leading to Tupižnica, both with a similar distance (24–26 km one way) but with different terrain characteristics:
Option 1:
Runs through the villages of Štipina, Potrkanje, Ravna, Debelica, and Manjinac (State Road IIB class). This route is slightly longer but features a more gradual climb through rural landscapes.
Option 2:
Passes through Kaličina, Valevac, and Donja Sokolovica (State Road IIA class). Part of this route follows EuroVelo 13, making the initial section more accessible.
Both routes follow asphalt roads up to the telecommunications tower (repeater). From there, several unmarked MTB and hiking trails lead further to the main attractions on Mount Tupižnica.
Both routes combine an easy ride through lowland terrain with a serious mountain climb that requires good physical condition, a proper mountain bike, and solid technical riding skills. The final part of the climb—especially from the village of Manjinac or after leaving EuroVelo 13—becomes extremely steep, with gradients reaching up to 16.9%, rougher asphalt, and technical challenges.
This is not just a cycling route — it is a true mountain adventure that rewards the most determined riders with an unforgettable experience at the summit.
