The Red Church “Holy Trinity” is a single-nave church built in 1866, constructed from red stone at the foot of the “Borov Kamak” rock near the village of Borovitsa, located about 13 kilometers from Belogradchik.
It is part of a tourist route, accessible via an unpaved road, and is surrounded by votive crosses, caves, as well as the remains of a Celtic sanctuary and a Roman fortification.
The church can be reached by a gravel road, as it lies along a tourist route established by the Municipality of Belogradchik. It was built in 1866 by local residents on the foundations of an older temple. The structure is entirely made of red stone, carved from nearby rock formations, and its construction was carried out by Italian craftsmen. The icons and frescoes were painted by Russian artists.
The church houses three valuable icons, a gift from Patriarch Maxim, which had previously been presented to him by the Patriarch of Romania, the Georgian Patriarch, and the President of Bulgaria.
The site also features votive crosses, two caves, and the remains of a Celtic sanctuary and a Roman fortification. It is believed that a monastery once existed here. According to local residents, the place has a special, almost magical atmosphere, where prayers are more easily answered.
The construction of the monastery began in 2010, when the Holy Synod of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church confirmed the decision of the Vidin Diocesan Council to declare the “Holy Trinity” church in the village of Borovitsa as the Borovitsa Monastery “Holy Trinity.”
