The Church of St. John the Baptist

A gem of sacred art

About this destination

The Church of St. John the Baptist in the village of Vrbovo is a historical and cultural monument that preserves the authentic appearance of church architecture from the 15th–17th centuries. Built more than four centuries ago, the church is single-nave, semi-subterranean, and modest in its external appearance—typical of the early Ottoman period, when Christian temples had to remain discreet and hidden from the authorities.

The interior of the church is remarkable. Frescoes dating from 1652, largely well preserved, depict scenes from the life of Christ, St. John the Baptist, St. George, and St. Demetrius, as well as rare iconographic compositions characteristic of the 17th century. Particularly notable are unique details such as scenes from the life of St. John the Baptist and canonical representations of saints.

The carved wooden iconostasis from the 19th century is also highly valued, although most of its icons have been lost.

After nearly 70 years without services, the church was reconsecrated on Easter in 2018 by the Metropolitan of Vidin, Daniil, and today it functions during religious holidays, thanks to donations from descendants of the village’s former residents.

The architectural plan and interior decoration reflect a carefully conceived spatial design, in which the richness of the interior surpasses the modest exterior. The preserved frescoes and historical records make this church an important monument of cultural and spiritual heritage in the region.
