The Belogradchik Rocks are one of the most impressive natural phenomena in Bulgaria and a unique natural landmark more than 200 million years old. This spectacular landscape stretches across the area of the town of Belogradchik and the surrounding villages, forming a belt approximately 30 kilometers long and up to 3 kilometers wide, creating a view that both captivates and inspires.
The most famous and dramatic rock formations are located in the immediate vicinity of Belogradchik, where over the centuries they have been given picturesque names based on the shapes they resemble—people, animals, and mythical figures such as the Madonna, the Monks, the Horseman, the Bear, Adam and Eve, the Lion, the Little Shepherd, and many others.
West of the town lies a second group of rocks, accessible by road, characterized by steep cliffs and massive stone formations that leave a powerful visual impression. A third group of rocks is situated to the east of Belogradchik, further completing this unique natural mosaic.
Throughout history, these rocks have served not only as a natural wonder but also as natural fortifications. Sites known as Mali Zbeg and Veliki Zbeg were used in various periods as shelters and defensive points by Byzantine, Bulgarian, and Ottoman soldiers, thanks to their rugged and inaccessible terrain.
From a geological perspective, the rocks were formed through long-term processes of sand and clay deposition in what was once a marine environment, combined with erosion and other natural forces. Their distinctive reddish color comes from iron oxides present in the sandstone and conglomerate, giving the area a unique visual identity and making it an essential destination for nature lovers and photographers.
Due to their exceptional natural value, the Belogradchik Rocks were declared a natural monument in 1949 and have been listed in Bulgaria’s National Register of Natural Landmarks since 1987. Today, they represent one of the most visited tourist attractions in northwestern Bulgaria and an ideal destination for exploration, hiking, and experiencing unspoiled nature.
