The Albotin Monastery Cycling Route is an easy and pleasant cycling route that leads from the city of Vidin to the Albotin Monastery—a unique medieval monastery carved into limestone rock. This route combines a gentle ride along the Danube River, through vineyards and villages, to a spectacular natural and cultural-historical monument dating from the 14th century.
The route is mostly paved with excellent asphalt, while the last kilometer is a gravel/dirt road.
Albotin Monastery (also known as Albutin Monastery) is an inactive medieval monastery. It is built into a limestone massif on the northern side of the river, at a height of about 25 meters. It is accessed via a steep, narrow sandy path, which begins at the Hajducka Fountain—a historic spring where travelers traditionally refreshed themselves.
Architecture: The construction makes use of shallow natural caves and shelters beneath the rocks, with additional carved rooms and niches designed for religious and everyday functions. Today, the monastery is protected as a cultural-historical monument.
Cycling experience: Most of the route is flat, with very gentle inclines of up to about 3%.
This is more than just a cycling route—it is a journey through centuries of Bulgarian spirituality and a unique example of a rock monastery!
