At the foot of Stara Planina lies a natural jewel — the Bigar Waterfall. Its cascading beauty, about 35 meters high, forms over porous limestone known as “bigra,” which gave the waterfall its name. Upstream from the main waterfall stretches a true natural wonder — a series of smaller waterfalls and three crystal-clear limestone pools whose turquoise-blue-green water captivates every visitor. These pools are among the true gems of Stara Planina, and their water is so clean that it is safe to drink. A walking trail leading to them continues toward the 13th-century Monastery of St. Onuphrius, offering visitors a chance to enjoy the natural splendor of Stara Planina.
This well-maintained picnic area, easily accessible from the main road, makes Bigar an ideal place for a day trip, hiking, or simply enjoying the tranquility of nature. Thanks to its geomorphological uniqueness and picturesque surroundings, the Bigar Waterfall is considered one of the most beautiful natural attractions in eastern Serbia and a favorite destination of nature lovers, hikers, and photographers.
